Why Is This Important?

Researchers are interested in finding out how common it is for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders to experience Anxiety.  When an individual with an ASD does experience Anxiety severe enough to be diagnosed or treated, does it seem to be due to genetic factors (that is, Anxiety runs in the family) or trouble coping with the individual's own challenges?

Data from IAN Research:

Pie chart showing percentage of children with ASD who also have been diagnosed with or treated for anxiety disorder.

This chart shows that 19% of the children in IAN Research with an Autism Spectrum Disorder have also been diagnosed, at some point in their lives, with an Anxiety Disorder.  It is interesting to note, however, that when we consider only children age 10 and older, that figure goes up to 39%, as shown below.

Pie chart showing percentage of children with ASD older than age 10 who also have been diagnosed with or treated for anxiety disorder.

A related chart compares how often children in IAN Research with a diagnosis of Autism, PDD-NOS, or Asperger's Syndrome have been diagnosed with or treated for ADHD or ADD, Depression, Anxiety, and Bipolar Disorder.
