Why Is This Important?
Researchers are interested in knowing how many children are receiving which type of Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis. Educators and policy makers are interested in this question, as well, because it may impact the specific services that will be needed by these children in the future.
Data from IAN Research:

This chart shows what percentage of children in IAN received each of the diagnoses on the autism spectrum. (Many parents report a change in their child’s diagnosis over time. Only data on the child’s first diagnosis is presented here.) This chart shows that 39% of the children in IAN with an ASD received Autism as a first diagnosis, while 32% received a diagnosis of PDD-NOS, and 14% received a diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome. If these results are compared with those for Current Diagnosis, it appears a number of children moved from the PDD-NOS diagnosis to the Autism diagnosis over time.
