Why Is This Important?
It was once believed that up to 80% of individuals with autism were also cognitively impaired, but that figure is now believed to be much lower due to both the broadening of the ASD category to include more "high functioning" individuals, and due to earlier intensive intervention.
Researchers are interested in finding out how many children with ASDs are also being diagnosed with Mental Retardation in today's context.

This chart shows that 9% of children with ASDs in IAN Research have been diagnosed with Mental Retardation. This figure goes up to 13% if only children with a diagnosis of Autism or Autistic Disorder are considered, as shown below:
