Why Is This Important?
Sibling mental health is important in ASD families for several reasons. For one thing, mental health status indicates how siblings are faring as they cope with the stresses of having a brother or sister with an ASD. In addition, researchers are interested in genetic factors: do anxiety and ASDs run together in some families? Or is it the stress of living with a brother or sister with an ASD that contributes to anxiety in siblings?
Data from IAN Research:

This chart shows that 5% of all siblings taking part in IAN Research, at some time in their lives, have been diagnosed with or treated for an Anxiety Disorder.

This chart shows that 10% of siblings aged 10 to 18 taking part in IAN Research, at some time in their lives, have been diagnosed with or treated for an Anxiety Disorder. (It is important to consider older children especially, since they are more likely to have experienced various issues than younger children.)
