Sibling Relationships and Autism
The sibling bond is a key relationship in many people's lives. In families with a child on the autism spectrum, how does this bond influence the development of both the child with ASD and his or her unaffected siblings? Researchers are delving into the intricacies of how sibling roles emerge in families with a child with ASD to explore a variety of questions. How do siblings of children with autism fare in the long term? Are children with autism capable of benefiting from a relationship with a typically developing sibling? How can the positive aspects of the sibling relationship be fostered by parents and others? Explore these and many other issues in Sibling Studies: The Good, the Bad, and the Contradictory.

IAN Research Report #4
Read about IAN's latest preliminary findings, including an analysis of the weight and height data provided by IAN families this past fall. It appears that children with ASDs are both taller and heavier than their typical peers -- a result that supports other recent research regarding increased head and body size in autism.
We also present a report on the use of one-on-one aides in different U.S. states, and explore how the proportion of the day that children with ASDs spend in a regular vs. special education classroom varies from pre-K to high school.

Parental Stress and Depression
Research has shown that the parents of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) suffer even more stress than the parents of children with other disabilities. In this article, we discuss how stress and depression are related; the impact they can have on families with a child with an ASD; and how helping parents in distress often helps the whole family.

Committee Meets to Set U.S. Autism Research Agenda - Your Input Needed!
Did you know the autism research agenda of the United States will be decided over the next few months? Decisions made now will influence how millions in autism research funds are spent. Read here about a high-level meeting that took place in Washington, D.C., with the aim of developing the Strategic Plan for Autism Research. Learn how you can submit your opinion about what autism research is needed by responding to a formal Request For Information (RFI) issued by the National Insitute of Mental Health (NIMH). Find out, in addition, how the IAN Project is developing an Autism Research Priority Survey that will offer you another easy way to provide your input to decision makers.
