IAN Community E-Newsletter - June 18, 2010Date First Published: June 18, 2010 Contents Grandparents Survey ResultsMore than 2,600 grandparents have taken the IAN Grandparents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Survey, sharing their experiences and insights. What diverse roles do grandparents play in the lives of children with ASD? How does a diagnosis of ASD impact a grandparent, and what contributions do they make to families with a child on the autism spectrum? Read about our Grandparent Survey results here: IAN Genetics!IAN Genetics! The vast store of genetic samples available to cancer and diabetes researchers has led to major breakthroughs in treating both conditions. The very limited number of genetic samples available to autism researchers is viewed as a major roadblock to progress. Now IAN, in partnership with Washington University and UCLA, is launching a program to overcome this lack as quickly as possible. Our goal is to increase greatly the existing number of genetic samples. Find out how! Treating Feeding Disorders in ASDSome children on the autism spectrum are not just picky eaters. They have a "feeding disorder" severe enough to interfere with growth, the ability to benefit from other interventions, and family life. The IAN team interviewed Dr. Anil Darbari, Medical Director of the Pediatric Gastroenterology/Nutrition and Feeding Disorders Program at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, to learn how the many different aspects of these disorders are treated. Disclosure: Telling Someone You Have an ASDAn adult with high-functioning autism or Asperger's may have an "invisible disability" -- a condition others don't immediately perceive unless they are told about it. How does a person decide whether to tell a college, an employer, or a potential date that he or she has an ASD? IAN on National Public Radio: The Grandparents SurveyA recent report by National Public Radio (NPR) discusses the results of the IAN Grandparents of Children with ASD Survey. Carol Cutler, a grandmother who took the survey, shares her story, and there are also comments by members of the IAN team. |
