My son will use the rest rooms whenever we go anywhere without having an accident. However, he continues to have accidents at home. I keep reminding him to use the bathroom but he says not right now, then he goes in his pants. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle this problem?

My son is similar, I make him get on the potty at regular intervals to prevent accidents. He goes as soon as we walk in the door from whereever we have been, half an hour after he eats and right before bed, as soon as he gets up and then of course when he says he has to go.

Thank you for responding. Sometimes I feel so isolated about what to do and how to respond to these situations. Most people I talk to have no clue what autism is. They think it is like a cold and tell me that he will grow out of it.

I know the feeling, lol...I had an old acquaintance tell me he was diagnosed with autism but he grew out of it. I knew right then he had no idea what i was talking about...lol...Don't worry, you are not alone...if you ever feel like chatting you can email me...illbeyoureverything2001@yahoo.com...I wouldn't mind having someone who is going through what i am going through to talk to...

The bathroom is a huge issue at our house. Our biggest problem is number 2. Robbie is ten now and we still haven't solved it. The only time he goes poo is in the bathtub and we have tried everything. He can sit on the potty for 10 min no problem. but if he needs to go he just holds his butt cheecks together. When we find him in the bathtub he will immediatly get out and want a pull up on we have to fight him just to wipe him off. Has anyone gone through this and found an answer?

You know my son has a big problem with that too, it is much easier for him to pee on the potty then poop. But recently he has found that he really doesn't like it on him, he is three and wears pull ups. When he has messed in the pull up, he says, "I can't look." and covers his eyes, He likes books so I let him read a book while he is on the potty and I also tell him, "Rub your belly and go 'out, out' and squeeze your belly." (something I started when he was between a year and a half to two years when I initially tried to potty train him.) For him the "Out out" thing is like magic (I figure whatever works right? lol) He can tell me when he needs to pee, but has a hard time with telling me he needs to poop. I am wondering if maybe he doesn't even feel it himself, because when he does poop on the potty, he has to look to see that he did it, as if he couldn't feel himself going. However, two days ago he did tell me that he needed to go poop and he got on the potty and went, I thought, yay, we hit a milestone, but since he has went in his pull-up twice. It seems a real struggle, and parents look at you like you are incompitent as a parent because your "older child" is still wearing diapers. It's frustrating to have people looking at your child as if they pitied him for having such poor excuses for parents. Or is it just me? lol

Hi,
My son is recently doing the same thing. I think it is more comfortable for him. Power to him.
I also think their is an underlying reason beyond mental capacity. Kids have a good connection with their own body, I feel he is expressing himself to others, that something is wrong with his poop, and can you please check it out.
Is his poop sticky (do you have to clean him thoroughly afterwards), does it have undigested food in it etc.

I am a type 1 diabetic so I check my son occaisionally for his sugar levels. If anything, his sugars are occaisionally low. Once he was as low as 59. His diet did not change other then an increase in the amount he was eating. still the same things, just more.
