My son is 3 and was diagnosed with PDD (but the specialists anticipate a change in diagnosis when he is a little older - they are leaning more toward aspergers). He completed an IQ meant for 7 year olds, only stopping because the test ended, not because he couldn't go on. He has been using complete sentences since he was 18 months old, including all the "the's, and's, to's, etc." complete sentences. With in the last month or so, he has started pointing more, I have to tell him to use words, several times in fact, before he says anything, and then it is two words or even just one word. He refers to himself in third person, for instance, he was smelling some flowers on our kitchen table and he said, "Flowers. Jakobe smell." This is not an all the time thing, but it is happening more frequently. Should I be concerned, or is it just because he is three and maybe a phase? I am not really sure what to make of it all.

Hi Genie.

This is one of those cases where you really need to consult your treatment team because they are familiar with your child's previous behavior and development. If there are professionals already involved with your son --such as the specialists you refer to in your post-- now is a good time to tell them about your observations and fears. Hopefully, they will be able to reassure you.

Is your son receiving any speech therapy? The speech and language pathologist is another person with whom you might discuss this issue.

No he's not receiving any speech therapy, when they tested him, he was talking like a little professor, they were impressed when they showed him a picture of tall and short, they said this is tall, what is this and he said "short" they said almost all the children his age tested said small instead of short, he says, "difficult" instead of hard, "simple" instead of easy. The other day, I handed him a book and he said, "This is too complicated, I can't remember the words." I guess the reason why I asked here is that I am not sure how I should react and I didn't want to be overreacting. Thanks for your help though, I will talk to the specialists.
