Hi I am new and am hoping to get some advice on how to start teaching the alphabet and numbers to a young child with autism. I don't really know where to start and have been unable to find any materials on the internet or in stores.

Welcome to IAN, dkce.
I'm afraid I don't have a background in education, and so don't have a good answer for you. As for books, you might want to look through the offerings of some of the autism-focused publishers, such as Jessica Kingsley (http://www.jkp.com/catalogue/index.php/cat/autism) and the Autism Asperger Publishing Company (http://www.asperger.net/bookstore.htm). Also: is there a special education teacher or other knowledgeable professional that you are already working with who might have some insight for you?
I was thinking it might help our readers share some ideas if they knew a little bit about your child. Would you mind sharing your child's age, and perhaps cognitive abilities, sensory issues, and interests?

Hi dkce
Teaching the alphabet to an autistic child, like anything else with autistic children, is different in every case. My new company Room 52 Publications has begun creating workbook materials to tackle this exact subject. Until now there have not been any materials out there with which to teach these basic skills. I got tired of constantly creating my own materials or adapting general ed materials for my special students. My books are written using ABA theories and can be taught in discreet trial format or in small group situations. I also wrote a series for teaching numbers.
It sounds like my books would be perfect for you.

Thank you so much Room52!!!
I checked out your website as soon as I saw your reply. It's amazing. Your site was really nice and easy to use but most importantly it is exactly what I was looking for. I have searched the internet for materials for teaching the basics to autistic children and could'nt find anything except expensive software and books full of advice but nothing to work with. I can't wait to get my books and get to work . Good luck to you with your new company. You have created a product that is much needed in the autism community!!!

My very intelligent son had a hard time with the ABC"S. He knew them when I figured out to buy him a 10ft. Train Puzzle by Melissa and Doug. Each piece has a alphabet on it and he took to it better than candy. It was the only thing I ever found that worked. Also, on the Bumble bee website they have the letters and numbers you can print out as flash cards for free they are great as well. "Do the Alphabet" with Big Bird he memorized the catchy song since memorization is no problem for Autistic children. I hope this helps! and Good Luck!
