If you look at the creatures of the world humans are very unique in the fact that the majority of us want to explore our environment constantly. Now for most animals they are very content to stay in their general area they like they like sameness, they often make routines and become agitated when either is disrupted. If any of us feel compromised, exposed or vulnerable it causes anxiety levels to rise, and often leads to agitation, so perhaps autistic people seek sameness and routines as a means to feel security because security equal safety.

I think that a simple cortisol test done by collecting saliva from the mouth of young autistic children could help us determine how dramatically the affects in environment and routine changes affect them without significantly altering variable that could hinder results.
