I am a mother of an eleven year old with Autism. I am new to this site and I love it. My son is very gifted in Music, but I am having a hard time trying to find piano lessons for my son. I am looking forward to sharing this site with the other parents at my son's school. If there is anyone out there with any comments or suggestions please feel free.

What part of degree on spectrum does he lye at? Aspergers, high functioning etc.

Hi EliW, and welcome to IAN.

(And hi to lachelle, too!)

It is wonderful that your son is so gifted in music. I know that finding the right piano teacher may be a challenge, but there are a few things you might do to try to identify someone. First of all, you might ask the school district if they have any music therapists or music teachers who work with special needs students who you could contact in order to ask if they could identify some possible piano teachers in the community who would work well with your son.

Another possibility: local autism advocacy groups where parents share their knowledge about resources in the area. For example, you might check in with your local chapter of the Autism Society of America: http://www.autism-society.org/site/PageServer?pagename=community_chapters

Also: Sometimes a local music and instrument store will provide lessons to people of all levels, ages, and abilities; you could ask who of their piano instructors might be a good match.

Thank you for offering to tell other parents about IAN Community. We appreciate it! If you'd like to get some free brochures to share, fill out the simple online form here: http://www.iancommunity.org/cs/about_ian/spread_the_word_about_ian_brochure_order_form
