My son is not potty trained and paying for cases of pull ups is not cheap. I thought I had heard about getting the doctor or someone to write a script for them, but have never heard of this before or how to go about it. If any other parent knows if it is possible to get a script for my sons pull ups please give me any information on how to go about doing this.

Hi kurtsmom. Your post points out another one of those extra expenses that a family with a child on the spectrum can face: pull-ups for a prolonged period.
I would start by asking the pediatrician if there is a way for pull-ups to be covered as a medical expense. (Of course, that's going to depend on your insurance plan, too, but there are times some kind of pull-up is necessary because of medical issues for adults as well as kids. There must be some way to address that, even if the issue is developmental delay.) Also: if your family has one of those "flexible medical spending accounts" -- where you put money from your check into a tax free account to pay for medical expenses -- you might be able to use those funds for pull-ups if the doctor wrote a justification.
Another thought: do they have the Medicaid autism waiver in your state, and are you on it? Where they exist, these programs are supposed to help families with a child with autism manage by providing things like respite care. Although the programs seem to vary tremendously in different places, this is the kind of thing that fund might cover.
I hope others will leave their ideas here, as well!

I was told by my peditrician that he can write a script for pull-ups. They have to be purchased at a major medical supply pharmacy. They can not be purchased anywhere else and that Home Health worker will have to apply for them for you and usually they are only approved for about 1/2 of what you use.Not alot of help. That is if Autism waiver is to help pay for them and of course the severity of needs of the child. You can also turn some portion of the cost in on your taxes as long as you have receipts. You would need to check into this for your state to see if this can apply to you. Hope this helps.
