Hi, A doctor in 1967 dianosed me as retarded. A psychologist who treats people with traumatized head injuries, said. I can see that your mental state as a child was retarded and I would have too agree, when I look back on my childhood.
You need to understand how much the mind can make things harder for the brain to fix itself, heal istself or rewire itself, it as my psychologist told me. REWIRE!
What takes(starts working) place first, the mind, brain or the five senses? The five senses started working first, feeding the brain and stimulatng it more like supercharge, the five senses at birth had the brain so fired up-, next the five senses sent all this new stuff to the brain, the brain is placing this new stuff all over, NO TWO THINGS GO TO THE SAME SPOT, (THE BRAIN DOESN'T KNOW HOT OR COLD OR WHAT TASTE GOOD OR BAD OR WHAT RIGHT OR WRONG, FAILURE OR SUCCESS-ITS THE MIND DOING ALL THIS, LEARNING TO ALLOW THE BRAIN TO RECIEVE AND SEND INFORMATION TO THE MIND WITH AN OPEN CHANNEL-FREE OF THOUGHT, BIAS FEELING, JUDGING, PAST EXPERIENCE FROM MEMORY, LOOKING AHEAD TO PLAN BETTER. LEARNING NOT TO INTERFER WITH THE BRAIN ABILITY TO USE ITS IMAGINATION TO CREATE SOMETHING NEW.
Thats right imagination to explore and know all things done by people came from the creative part of the imagination the brain used as a baby.
Go out explore just the five senses without analize but don't comment. This will also create new memories and experiences.

Hi katarri, and welcome to IAN.

I completely understand how overwhelming it can be to try to untangle the varied autism treatments on offer, and to gain access to them.

Many of the major ones in use are offered in public school: speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, social skills groups. Applied Behavior Analysis is sometimes also available, but is often harder to access because it is very expensive. However, even when a child does not receive ABA, their treatment plan often includes a functional behavioral plan and behavioral techniques are used to help eliminate negative behaviors and encourage positive ones. Medications generally come from a pediatrician or psychiatrist, and are covered on a person's medical plan if they are lucky enough to have one. What meds are prescribed depends on the child's needs. (Is the child having constant meltdowns? Or is so anxious he can't focus at school? Different medications are required for different issues.)

We have a whole section on the website about treatments, as well as IAN Research Reports based on the input of families taking part in the IAN Research project. (They fill out questionnaires about all the treatments they are using.) I think if you take a look at the articles and reports on our Treatments page, you will find a great deal of useful information: http://www.iancommunity.org/cs/therapies_treatments/

How you access specific treatments will vary depending on your situation and resources. To arrange for services through the school, you would use the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process; for medication - your medical plan; etc. Often, if you're not sure how to navigate these systems, parents will seek the help and advice of the autism advocacy organizations:

Autism Speaks' Autism Response Team: 888-288-4762
Autism Society of America chapters: http://www.autism-society.org/site/PageServer?pagename=community_chapters

I hope this information will be helpful for you.

Also: a comment on what arustyc said... He is right about rewiring the brain. Many treatments, from sensory based therapies to behavioral interventions, are directed at exactly that.
