Usually I tell parents I meet and give them the URL for this site and Autism Speaks. I am currently in contact with a clinical licesned social worker at my sons' school. She is an amazing woman. I usually give her phone numbers and website addresses for a lot of different things that affect our community: from abuse counseling to homeless shelters and Autism Awareness. It is surprising that social workers and doctors in a community don't know about this site and it is a shame that most don't even try to make an effort to find out about programs for families that are at risk.
I have a question? What if there is no history of any mental illness or mood disorder in a family. I am a single mom with a 10 year old son with PDD-NOS. Out of my four sons he is the only child with ASD diagnoses. He is also AD/HD as well. One of his brothers is currently also AD/HD and my older son was diagnosed AD/HD but no longer. Unfortunately I don't know about his father (or his family), especially since his biological father was adopted as an infant. As for my family there is no mental illness or mood disorder. When I was pregnant with him his imbilical cord was bloced and the doctor thinks that, that might be the cause for Autism in his case. He also has a different father from his three other brothers. It is all confusing, especially when most doctors are not skilled with handling children with special needs. My son has been misdiagnosed since he was a toddler, it was a Child Study Team member at his school that recongised the Autism qualities that he exhibited. Other wise he would have been classified as mentally retarded.
My youngest son has PDD-NOS and ADHD. I have a total of 4 sons, my oldest and 3rd sons have ADHD and my 2nd is normal functioning. It's a circus here. I also thank you for this forum. All we need now is a chat room or do you have one?
My youngest son, 8, was misdiagnosed quite a few times. When he was 18 months he was not sitting up, walking, or talking much. The dx was he's overweight and every child developes differently. I have 3 other children (boys) who hit all the milestones. When he was 2,3,and 4 there was problems with speech and not answering when called, lining up toys but not playing with them, hardly no talking and no sentence structure. The dx was hearing and communication diffencey. When he started school at 5, it was behavior problems, because he would roam around the classroom, not listen to the teacher, all he would do is scribble, and no eye contact. When he was 6, I had the school Child Study Team evaluate him, he was put in Special Ed/ inclusion classes. the doctor and child study team/cst agreed it was ADHD. He was put on ritlin then concerta. But they were saying that he was borderline mentally retarded with communication problems. He started receiving OT, PT, speech, and group therepy. After going to a new school at he age of 7, the CST noticed that he had autistic tendacies, like hiding under tables, roaming around the room, no socialization, covering his ears at loud noises, repetative behavior, as well as ADHD and communication problems. A neuologist came to the school and said it was PDD-NOS and ADHD. He still takes Concerta but at a high dose, 54mg. and Clonidine to help him sleep at night. Without the Clonidine no gets any sleep. In shcool he still receives OT, speech, and counseling. He is currently in an Autism Class for 3rd graders. When I was pregnent with him I was under alot of stress. I was working the 10pm to 7am shift and was handling some toxic chemicals, like paints, bug sprays, and weed killers, I worked at Wal-mart in PA. Then I was put on bed rest, when I was 6 months along and the umbiblical cord was almost folded in half. I still wonder if that could have caused problems with his development.
Hi, everyone, I'm new here. I Have a son who was diagnosed with PDD-NOS. Hy son would not eat vegetables or fruits. None. I was feeding him babyfood fruits and veggies. It was the only way to give him those nutrients and vitamins. Have you tried vitamins? Our ped. gave my son vitamins while I kept on trying to get fruits and veggies into him. My son loves ketchup, so we put it on everything, except the fruit. He still wont eat 99% of the fruits in the world. He'll only eat bananas. I just keep on trying. Pediasure might be another way to go. The doctors have told me that my son might grow out of the picky eater mode, maybe. At least I got him to eat some veggies. I steam them and add butter to them and if he wants ketchup, I put some on or put it on the side and let him dip it. He's now 8, and I think it was when he turned 7, that he started eating. Only problem is, is that my mother has to feed him. Good luck.
