I remember an event in which my son who was, at that time in 2004, just learned to walk, had actually walked outside of my apartment and the complex on to a sidewalk next to a roadway that is at times busy. That was back in PA and the Children and Youth Services had no clue (may not even today) that my son has ASD. Luckily he was never hurt. Then just last Sept, my son, age 8, tried in vain to break free of me and run/elope towards the highway in front of my MD home. Luckily he didnt get away from me, but it sure is scary. I cannot imagine families pains if their kids with ASD do that then get hurt or worse. Its scary

Hey all and welcome to the boards Chad and Tigpooh. Im sorry to hear about your experiences. Since Jan 21 my son has been living in the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore MD receiving the help and I sure hope it will work. Over the past few days inparticular, my son, as my mom and I visit, would attack both of us plus the staff. But yesterday Feb 3 my son literally was on a rampage attacking my mom and I and the staff. He kicked, hit, slapped (with full force) kicked, bit and so forth. But at least he is where they are working with him.

Another stressful event and one I consider the most dangerous occurred on Nov 6th while driving ona major highway my son began attacking me out of the clear blue. Some how some way I still managed to get him under control and maintain control of the car. I have alerted Kennedy Krieger Institute regarding this issue plus host of other issues regarding my son, and in the not to distant future he will begin a 4 month stint at their behavior part calle NBU..NeuroBehavioral Unit. I hope no one on here or in the world has to go thru similar horror. I sure hope that by the time my son's stay ends that he will be a much much different child, one who will be as close to a normal kid as possible. Also hopefully he will out grow his hyperness as he wakes up every morning bouncing and springing off the wall.

Thank you very much Sue. Currently my son is receiving whatAnne Arundel County, MD School System calls "Home/School partial Hospitalization Program" which for my son, Martin, started just last weekm some 2 weeks after his behavior issue got him out of school for the time being. Kennedy Krieger Institute will do an eval onhim on Nov 23 to see if he fits their NBU programs, which I believe it will. His behavioral issues seem to be getting worse as he gets older. He is on higher doses of adderall and risperidone but KKI believe that if he gets into their unit, he will need a whole new set of meds. I sure hope that my son's behaviors get under control.

My 8 yr old son has severe behavioral issues. He had been on Focalin but that has not helped much, then he taking risperdol but theyre going to up it and seeif that helps. but for school its too late. he will now receive home school for the time being. Meanwhile at his weekly appointment at Kennedy Krieger and they too have seen his behaviors. As of now, he is waiting for the impatient hospital at KKI NBU. I sure hope they can help his behavioral issues because it is causing me stress to the point of missing work

Hey all! Its been a while since Ive been onhere. My 8 year old son was referred to Kennedy Krieger back at the end of Sept after he had several incidents in school and on the bus which led to a 2 day suspension from the bus and a 1 day suspension from school. In one he grabbed a pencil from the teacher's desk and ran in a stabbing-like motion towards the teach, which led him to be taken to the local hospital. They referred him to Kennedy Krieger and since then we've been going once a week and he still displays behavior problems. KKI is referring him to the NBE-NeuroBehavioral Unit which is going to be at least a month long process before he gets in. He was taking 40mg of focalin at one time and his new peditrican changed it to Addrall and his night med is now Risperidone. Despite his medication keepinghim some what calm, he still goes off the deep end. I am hoping he can get a proper diagnosis and medication to help control.

thank you that list does help. I dont know if this helps or not but my son, being on 4 different meds, of which, 2 are actually the samer kind--Focalin, only difference is is that one is the generic brand which he gets 2x a day and the other which is the XR brand gets once a day both of them help keep him calm then abilify somewhat helps but I dont really see any difference. The bed time one Clonidone actually makes him sleep Before he got on it, he stayed up all night and day. He cant seem to express his feelings Is that part of autism?

As a single father to my 7 yr old son, I can relate to the stress. Often my son will, just out of the clear blue yonders, hit, kick, bite, slap, head bunt me, in addition to throwing toys at me, unfotunately hitting me with luck shots. Sometimes the episodes will last anywhere from 2 minutes to 20 or so minutes. I dont know exactly what causes that but I often sometimes wonder, given my work week schedule if that could have something to do. Ive been on vacation this past week and Ive experienced this several times so I am not so sure if my work schdul as anything to do with it. I sure hope that there would be a way to help or may be kennedy krieger can help.

I am a single father to my 7 yr old son who has been diagnosed with Developmental Delay Disorder PDD ADDHD and Speech delays. His biological mother, who gave birth last only 11 month with us before she walked out on us. Since then I have found out that my son's birth mother has been diagnosed with Schizophrenia, multiple personalities disorders, bipolar, and her IQ is 69. I admit I got hooked up with her not knowing anything was wrong until my son was 5 months old and one night I put him on the floor so he could learn to crawl and she go so mad that she threw a thick book at my son but I interfered and the book hit me. Anyway, my son has PDD, ADDHD, Speech delays, and Developmental Delay Disorder. Ive had full custody of my son since he was 1 yr old. I cant get child support due to the fact his mother is on SSI and though my son gets it it is based on my income. His mother has not bothered with seeing him even though the court order states she gets 1 hr once a week but we have been kind enough to let her see him all day and that was back in 2002 and 2003 but since then she refuses to even call visit, send b day card and gifts for him. Since Ive had full custody I am doing everything possible to get him to where he needs to be. Its been very difficult because he is very extremely hyper highly function yet he doesnt have enough to be classified with Aspbergers but he does have enough language where he is not autisic. However with his PDD and ADDHD, as well as Develomental delays and speech it all falls under the PDD and Autism Spectrum Disorder. I would like to get my son tested at Kennedy Krieger in Baltimore and see what they actually say. Im also wondering if they would even change his meds. I have met 2 doctors when living in PA that refuse to put him on Ritalin because that would only increase his hyperness.

Hello all! Im new to these boards. My 7 yr old son was diagnosed by a school psychiatrist with ADDHD
and PDD while we were living in Pennsylvania. We are in the process of moving to Maryland due to family medical issues. Ive hear an awful lot about the Kennedy Krieger. While in Pa my son has seen a different psychiatrist who also diagnosed my son with ADDHD and PDD. He put my son on abilify, clonidone, focalin, a generic brand of focalin, and busiprone. However the buspirone is used for anxiety per his school request. He was first diagnosed by the State of PA just prior to starting Head Start and he received Physical, Occupational, Special Occupational and Speech therapies from when he was 1 yr to 3yr and at age 4, when he was in kindergarten, his "special ed" teacher with only 5 total kids all with special needs, had my son transported to a special school about an hr away from where we were living (in Pa) due to behavioral issues my son displayed at school. According to the teacher, my son would sometimes hit, kick, throw tampertantrums and each time he did homework, even with me doing hand over hand with him as I was shown how to do, it did not satisfy the teacher. So in his new school, he did a lot better in the new school. But he did have his own pyschiatrist who gave him two different meds but that proved fruitless because, on average, at least 2x a week, my son would have to be restrained due to behavioral issues. At same time, his speech was slowly coming along. For the last 2 yrs he attended a school about 5 minutes away from home his speech remarkably improved but still isnt where it should be. His behavorial issues have to an extent calm down. He wakes up and is extremely hyper and very wild. The meds he takes takes about 30 min to calm down but at night his meds take an hr to take effect and I am wondering if it is due to his body having it in the system for so long--since Feb of 09. Sometimes at school he gets out of seat talks out of turn talks when he isnt suppose to. He also has had issues of being clingy too. Im just wondering how long does it take to get an appointment at Kennedy Krieger because I would like to have my son tested before I get him enrolled into the MD School System and Im also wondering how long before the school would do its own testing?
