Elopement

More information is needed on how to deal with Autistic children who wander off on their own.

Our five year old is an escape artist and has us scared out of our minds. We've got all kinds of locks on the doors; an alarm system he apparently knows how to defeat (getting a new one he can't turn off). Looking for a good window alarm/guard system.

He's just starting to talk and can't yet tell us why he wants out. We have no idea whether he's trying to get to school or some other place. We do know that he thinks he'll find Thomas the Tank Engine if he goes to the railroad tracks.

This very loud child gets unbelievably quiet when he's trying to escape. We don't take him places if we can avoid it.

How do you explain to a five year old who may not even be listening that it's dangerous to run off by yourself?

Hi ASDtrifecta.

I know this is a major issue for many families. Nothing is scarier than the thought that your child with autism may get out of the house and wander. I know we've all seen news stories on this topic, and I've heard from families how much the fear of this frays nerves and wrecks sleep. I have not seen research on how often this occurs, but it certainly is discussed by many families.

I'm wondering if anyone has had success with some of the new tracking devices which permit you to find your child with GPS? For example, there is this product many of us have seen in Duracell battery commercials: http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/locator.html

There is also a program instituted by law enforcement called Project Lifesaver where the police provide a small LoJack® SafetyNet personal transmitter around the wrist or ankle that emits an individualized tracking signal. Their intent is to protect any who may wander, from children with autism to adults with Alzheimer's. You might want to see if your local law enforcement agency is part of this: http://projectlifesaver.us/Lifesaver/

I appreciate the GPS idea. But Ideally it need to be corrected before they totally escape the property.

I know this message goes back a long time, but we are in the process of training a service dog for the exact reason, she should be ready to go in the next few weeks. My son too is an escape artist. Let me know if you have any questions. 8)

Hi AutizmMom, and welcome to IAN. :)

I would be very interested in hearing how working with the service dog goes. We have been thinking about doing a piece on research regarding service animals, as well as therapies involving animals, such as equine (horseback riding) therapy.
